The story of our slate

The lifetime of a building begins with the choice of materials. For hundreds of years, architects, designers, builders and homeowners have been inspired by the natural beauty of slate. Enable Slate Experts offer products made from the world’s best slate, sourced directly from leading suppliers who own the quarries they mine. We can assure certainty and consistency of supply.

Natural slate has a spellbinding magic to it.
Maybe it’s because it has been millions of years in the making.
Maybe it’s because it lasts a lifetime.
Or maybe it’s because every single slate is split by hand.

The stages of
slate production

Quarry

Millions of years in the making and layered perfectly, our slate comes from a single seam from quarries in Argentina, Spain or Wales.

We’re picky when it comes to sourcing slate, so we have personally visited each quarry to ensure that only the best quality product gets delivered to your home. Our slate is sourced from a handful of quarries, each with a quality pedigree and the skills to turn hunks of rock into stunning materials to adorn your home.

Splitting

Splitting slate is an artform and at Enable it is done entirely by our skilled craftsmen’s hands. This means every piece of slate is totally unique.

It takes seconds to split slate and anyone can do it – in the same way that anyone can saw a piece of wood. It takes years to perfect the art of splitting slate. Although every slate is unique, slating requires a uniform product that conforms to dimensional tolerances, to ensure that the finish is not only beautiful, but also long-lasting and maintenance free.

Tracking

The devil is in the detail, we trace the passage of each tile on your roof right back to the individual vein in the quarry that produced it.

A decorator knows that variations in wall paper batches can results in a sub-standard appearance on the wall. The same applies with slate. To ensure that you receive the best quality finish, we ensure that each slate comes from the same vein in the quarry. To do that, we need to be able to track slate from mountain to rooftop, so our quality control systems do just that. The result is the best possible result.

Fitting

Only our accredited fitters work with Enable Slate on your property.

There are only a handful of true slaters in New Zealand. It takes years of training and experience working on various projects to gain the required knowledge and skills required to make the most of this beautiful material.

Only our accredited fitters work with Enable Slate because we know we are only as good as the finished project. That’s we look after everything from sourcing the slate to the fitters who work on your project.
